One of the most interesting stories to come out in supercar news recently was Ferrari’s glitter-laden unveiling of their brand-new SF90 Stradale. The ceremony, held in the company’s world-famous Maranello Museum in Italy, had all the glamor associated with the Prancing Horse, yet here, they were showing us something we haven’t seen often from behind the factory doors.

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale represents the company’s unique take on the ever-growing Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle market (PHEV). With an “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” kind of attitude (albeit, perhaps a little reluctantly), Ferrari presented the world with their take on hybrid technology while maintaining their flair for style and performance.

While the idea of an eco-friendly powertrain in a Ferrari might be enough for a few rich people to pat themselves on the back, let’s be under no illusion, no one is saving the world here. The Ferrari SF90 Stradale is driven by a twin-turbocharged 4-liter V8 engine and three electric motors which give a combined total output of a rip-roaring 986 horsepower.

Ferrari says the SF90 has the highest output they’ve ever achieved in an eight-cylinder engine, producing 769 hp. Although the car has yet to be formally tested, the company claim it can go from 0-62 mph in 2.5 seconds, 0-124 mph in 6.7 seconds, and has a top speed of 211 mph.

Check out Ferrari’s official video for the SF90 Stradale. It’s very cinematic…

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale maintains the sleek, exotic design which is immediately associated with the brand. The mid-mounted engine promotes a “cab-forward” design which helps give the car a very low center of gravity. The aerodynamic experience of the SF90 is probably about as close to a space shuttle blast off as most earthlings can get.

The name - SF90 Stradale - refers to the 90th anniversary of the Scuderia Ferrari team and once again is a great example of how the Prancing Horse expertly blurs the lines between what is considered a track car and a road car.

While the 4-liter V8 engine in the SF90 will do most of the singing and dancing, this hybrid car also draws power from its ultra-lightweight 7.9 kWh battery pack. While alone only providing around 16 miles of range, the electric motors do have a unique influence on the driving experience of the car.

The battery pack supplies 217 hp to three electric motors: two of them power the front wheels, the third powers the eight-speed F1 gearbox located on the rear axle. This setup arms the Ferrari SF90 Stradale with precision torque vectoring - allowing varying amounts of power to be applied independently to each of the four wheels as and when needed.

While, once again, Ferrari have opted to shy away from the center console touchscreen which features in pretty much every other car on the road these days, the SF90 does have a high-tech 16-inch curved screen for the driver. The car also has a head-up display which changes according to which of the four driving modes are selected.

No supercar driving experience would be complete without the sheer thrill of 1,000 horses roaring in your face. To ensure the car maintains the acoustic prominence of its stellar brand name, Ferrari designed the SF90 to channel sound from the engine to the cockpit so as not to lose any of the audible excitement.

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale is due for production in 2020, with the standard specification model expected to be priced in the region of $1,000,000. This super-hybrid will also be available with a full sports-oriented specification.
