Earlier this week, the UK-based car manufacturer, Lotus, unveiled the latest addition to their fleet - the hotly anticipated Evija. Skipping the super car category entirely, Lotus dived headfirst into the hyper car market, revealing a potentially game-changing all-electric car which could set new standards at the elite levels of eco-friendly motoring.

The Lotus Evija has a sleek futuristic design which is sure to turn people’s heads. It’s a work of art in terms of both style and engineering. When petrolheads dig a little deeper under the hood, the facts and figures are pretty mind-blowing. Four electric motors deliver a whopping 1,972 horsepower, accelerating from 0-62 mph in under three seconds, and providing a top speed of over 200 mph. POW.

The name, Evija, (pronounced ee-vi-ya) means “the first in existence”. It is a clear sign of how Lotus intends to approach the all-electric hyper car market and a statement of intent that these Brits mean business. With the car set to cost over $2.1 million, the Evija is certainly not a flight of engineering fancy and could potentially revolutionize the electric-powered niche.

The Lotus Evija has four electric motors which deliver 493 hp to each of the wheels. Power can be vectored independently to each wheel to assist with grip and handling.

While it is yet to be formally tested, Lotus claims the Evija will accelerate from 0-62 mph in under three seconds and will score 0-186 mph in less than nine seconds. Now I’m no physicist but that sounds pretty close to lightspeed to me.

The Lotus Evija has a stunning design with sleek lines presented against a flawless backdrop. The car has no mirrors (visibility is provided by cameras) and the doors have no handles (they are operated from the key fob).

The Evija is also the first production car to use laser headlights. Now, I’m not really sure what that means, but I’m certain it is awesome.

One of the most exciting things about the Lotus Evija beyond the driver’s experience is the car’s practicality. Lotus has set a target of a 250-mile range which will certainly help sedate those who suffer from battery-life anxiety.

The Evija can also charge super quickly. It’s faster than a cell phone. A charge from 0-80% of the battery takes just 12 minutes on standard 350kW chargers. A full charge on soon-to-be-released 800kW chargers should take only nine minutes.

The Lotus Evija is constructed out of a single-piece carbon fiber monocoque chassis giving a very low weight of just 1,680 kg, making it the lightest pure-electric hyper car ever to go into series production.
