TOP ACTIVITIES

Trekking

The Island of Capri offers some of Italy's best trekking routes, with its many paths leading you to hidden parts of the island where you can enjoy its marvelous nature and spectacular views. Bring your walking shoes and choose from a number of picturesque hiking options, as your guide will take you for a morning you will soon not forget.

How about a start with a pleasant walk along the narrow streets of Capri to Villa Jovis, where the Emperor Tiberius ruled the Roman Empire during the summer months? Or maybe its off to the Natural Arch and Punta Tragara, the best location to admire the Faraglioni, one of the most famous symbols of Capri. Don't forget the Augustus Gardens where Emperor Augustus spent his time during his holidays on the island, or the path up to the highest point on the island, Monte Solaro (587 meters) in Anacapri.

Some of our favorite hikes include:

  • The Phoenician Steps

Once the only connection between the port of Marina Grande and Anacapri, the Phoenician Steps are now a major attraction: 921 stone steps from where to admire the island of Capri in all its glory. Until only a few years ago, it was believed that the steps had been built by the Phoenicians (hence the name). However, recent historical research has revealed that the steps were, in reality, constructed by the Ancient Greeks, between the 7th and 6th century B.C. Up until 1874, the year in which the carriageway between Capri and Anacapri was completed, the steps represented the only connection between Anacapri and the rest of the world.

  • Villa Jovis

Today we trek to Villa Jovis, built in 27 AD by Emperor Tiberius, who ruled the Roman Empire from here until his death 10 years later. Villa Jovis, the largest of the twelve Tiberian villas on Capri, sits on the second highest peak on the island, at a bit under 1100 feet above sea level. Yes, its one of the island's highest peaks, and one of its more challenging hikes, but the rewarding views make the trek to the top almost worth it!

Our hike starts with a pleasant 40 minute walk along the narrow streets of Capri, towards Villa Jovis and we can also walk by both the Natural Arch and Punta Tragara, the best location to admire the Faraglioni, one of the most famous symbols of Capri, which have survived coastal landslides and erosion by the sea. Then its back towards the center of the island, where you can visit the Augustus Gardens - the famous spot where Emperor Augustus spent his time during his holidays on the island. Entrance tickets for the Augustus Gardens are not included and must be paid on site, but they serve as a lovely end to this panoramic experience!

  • The Hike from Above the Clouds

At almost 2000 feet above sea level, Monte Solaro is the highest and most panoramic point on the Island of Capri. From its heights, visitors enjoy sweeping views over the Faraglioni rock formations, the center of the town of Capri, and as far afield as the Sorrento Peninsula, the Galli islands, and the whole of the Gulf of Naples. On clear days, you can catch a glimpse to as far as the Gulf of Salerno.

For this hike you have options; the chairlift up from Piazza Vittoria can reach the summit in 12 minutes (tickets available on site), or for the true hiking enthusiast, the trail from Piazza della Pace all the way up to the top (the uphill portion is well marked and not overly strenuous) is about an hour. Once you reach the peak, you can relax with a drink on the rocking chairs at the La Canzone del Cielo cafe or simply stroll along the scenic overlook and snap pictures. Once you've had your fill of the beautiful view, we will hike down the mule track of the Cetrella Valley until reaching Viale San Michele. Together with its lush vegetation, this valley, dating back to the 16th C., is famous for the Church of Santa Maria, so tiny that it can easily be overlooked among the pines, oaks, and blooming orchids. Along the route towards the church a place of spiritual retreat for Domenican and Franciscan monks centuries ago you can view the craggy slopes of Mount Cappello, topped by an iron cross which can be seen from various vantage points around Anacapri, and the former home of the British writer Compton Mackenzie, one of the many historic personages who were drawn to the serenity and natural beauty of the island of Capri.

Once we arrive back at the historic center of Anacapri, we will pass blissfully unobserved as we saunter through the town's peaceful piazzas and bougainvillea and geranium festooned lanes. Piazza Vittoria, at the center of Anacapri, is also where the Via Giuseppe Orlandi begins, a pedestrian lane lined with artisan workshops, which winds its way right through the historic center of Anacapri. This is a hike for those looking for the best views of the island, so remember to take some photos!

RECOMMENDED RESTAURANTS

Mammà

1 Michelin Star. Thanks to chef Raffaele Amitrano, the cuisine at this restaurant has become even more focused on simplicity, precision and flavour. It is also full of colour and features an interesting play of textures, all of which result in elegant and generous Mediterranean dishes. The setting is very much in harmony with the cuisine, offering a contrast between the light-coloured decor and the blue of the ceramic tableware which echoes the sea nearby, while black and white photos on the walls tell the story of the island and its international jet-setting visitors.

D'Amore

Just a few metres from the town’s famous piazzetta, along the picturesque street which leads to Tiberius’s villa, D’Amore is a contemporary-style restaurant decorated in colours which echo those of the island and the sea. The menu features a selection of local recipes and Mediterranean dishes all reinterpreted in creative fashion by the chefs. Beautiful outdoor terrace.

Da Gelsomina

Da Gelsomina is one of Capri's landmark restaurants, where the same family has been preparing local specialties for generations. Il Geranio

At the Il Geranio restaurant you will find kindness and professionalism and a staff ready to advise you and accompany you on a journey aimed at discovering flavors and typical products that will contribute to making the memory of your stay in Capri unforgettable.

The characteristic ingredients of Neapolitan cuisine such as olive oil, garlic and chilli pepper create a perfect combination with fresh fish, seafood, shellfish, meat and vegetables to give rise to proposals that will entice your palate.

The cellar offers a vast choice of white and red wines from Campania and an accurate and selective reserve of Italian and foreign labels.

Terrazza Brunella

At sunset the sky above Capri begins to take on a deep orange while the first lights of Marina Piccola and the bobbing boats offshore begin to twinkle in the dark. There is a place where you can watch this show from the front row: Terrazza Brunella, the restaurant where the magic of Capri comes straight to your table, with Capri's traditional cuisine served with a spectacular view.

Terrazza Tiberio

Da Paolino

On Capri, under that thick roof of lemons that almost sheltered even from the rain, Paolino opened a restaurant, a simple trattoria where little attention was paid to appearances, everyone was a friend, the elderly went to play bocce, and traditional Capri dishes were prepared using only genuine ingredients.

The wine was that made from grapes from the vineyard, and fish was brought in daily from the fishermen of Marina Grande.

Gennaro Amitrano

Owner-chef Amitrano has moved from the centre of Capri to Marina Piccola, where his welcoming restaurant boasts beautiful sea views. Here he delights his guests with imaginative dishes full of flavour.

Aurora

Aurora means Capri for gastronomy enthusiasts scattered all over the globe. More than a restaurant, Aurora is a place that rightfully belongs, generation after generation, to the emblematic map of an island so full of myth, epic beauty and endless narratives.

Le Monzù

1 Michelin Star. Fine cuisine awaits you at this restaurant, where the views of the Faraglioni rocks, the sea and the island of Capri, especially from the outdoor terrace, go a long way to making this experience worthwhile. Your enjoyment is further enhanced by the blazing sunsets, the romantic twilight ambience and especially the cuisine of enthusiastic chef Luigi Lionetti from Campania, the child prodigy of Italian haute cuisine who conjures up classic regional dishes with modern flair and imagination.

L'Olivo

A huge, elegant dining room where candlelight and lamps highlight every decorative detail and where guests dine in comfort on light cashmere sofas and armchairs in a relaxing and stylish atmosphere. In the kitchen, chef Andrea Migliaccio from Ischia is a standard-bearer for creative, elegant and sophisticated Mediterranean cuisine.

The wine list focuses on the region while also including renowned labels from elsewhere in Italy and further afield.

Villa Margherita

Villa Margherita is family owned and lovingly operated by Pietro & his wife Paola along with their two children Eleonora and Antonino. Their families date back generations in Capri and both were born and raised here giving them a true understanding of how to capture the essence that is authentic to Capri. So we invite you to step away from the hustle + bustle of your day here to sit back, relax and enjoy a fabulous meal under the olive trees in Villa Margherita's magical garden overlooking the sea.

Villa Verde

Located on the picturesque island of Capri, Villa Verde is a culinary gem that embodies elegance and Mediterranean charm. With its breathtaking views of the azure sea and a sophisticated ambiance, this restaurant offers an unforgettable dining experience. Indulge in the finest Italian cuisine, crafted with the freshest local ingredients, and savor the flavors that capture the essence of this enchanting island. Villa Verde is a true haven for food connoisseurs and lovers of refined dining.

La Capannina

It all began with Francesco, a chef from Abruzzo who moved from Rome, where he lives for work, to Capri to work at the restaurant of the Hotel Quisisana. The island keeps him both for its pristine beauty and because on it he meets the love of his life, Teresa; he therefore decides to open a restaurant first in Piazza Umberto I, and then move to the current premises in via Le Botteghe and thus found La Capannina.
